Five Mum and Daughter Holiday Ideas

What better way to connect with the most important woman in your life than through a mother daughter experience! I’ve been lucky enough to share many holidays with my Mum over the years, and our memories from those trips are full of fun experiences, a few close calls (like the time we got stranded in a canoe in the middle of Phang Nga Bay during a torrential storm), special moments, and the kinds of conversations that you only have with your Mum.

While you won’t be taking a trip together this Mother’s Day, it’s a great time to plan something to treat her to once we are free to travel again. Here are a few ideas inspired by my own adventures with my Mum!

Weekend in the Vines

It’s hard to go past a weekend in wine country for the perfect escape with your mumma. What could be better than spending time together soaking up the country air, touring the local vineyards in search of the best drop, paired with delicious bites of course.

A few years ago I was lucky enough to spend an incredible few days with my Mum (and my dad too) in Stellenbosch, South Africa. While a wine weekend in South Africa is an amazing experience and one that I highly recommend adding to your Bucket List, we are blessed with incredible wine regions much closer to home. Two of my favourites are The Barossa Valley, and Margaret River.

The Ultimate City Stay

Whether your Mum’s idea of a great weekend involves hitting up the shops for a bit of retail therapy, indulging in fine dining, exploring neighbourhoods, soaking up the café culture, or checking out the art scene, city stays offer something for everyone. During the two years that I lived in New York City, I was lucky enough to have my Mum visit me regularly, and we certainly made the most of it! New York City really is the ultimate playground… we shopped up a storm (Hi Bloomingdales, I know you miss me!), had long conversations over amazing dinners at my favourite places (see previous blog post for my list), explored art galleries, and enjoyed more than a few Broadway shows together! Giving my mum a taste of my New York City experience, is something that I’ll never forget!

A New York City trip is one for the Bucket List, but a city stay with your mum can be created in any city around the world, and both Sydney and Melbourne never disappoint!

Indulge in a Spa Day

If you’re short on time, and spending a special day with your mum is more your thing, then treating her to a Spa Day brings the perfect combination of pampering, relaxation and connection. Creating the perfect spa experience for your Mum will come down to personal style and budget, but luckily there is no shortage of excellent Spa’s dotted all around Australia. As a Sydney-sider, The Darling Spa is up there with the best!

Island Escape

Who doesn’t love an island escape? Think sun drenched days, sipping cocktails by the pool, long walks on the beach, and endless indulgence on tropical fruits and the freshest catch of the day. One of the things I love about an island escape, is that islands come complete with incredible resorts that take care of all the details, so that all you have to do is enjoy some quality time with your mum!

Did you know that Australia is home to 8,222 islands? No passport or border crossings required! However… when we are free to travel again, I HIGHLY recommend Alila Seminyak, Bali. I’ve been on more than a few island escapes with my Mum, from Fiji to The Bahamas, and this one was our favourite!

A bit of Adventure

If your mum is a little bit wild at heart, then a trip with a taste of adventure might be more her style! Adventure comes in many forms… from an adventurous location such as a wilderness retreat, an adventurous style of holiday such as a safari or trek, or you can build adventure based activities into any holiday plan.

When I think adventure I immediately think of Africa, but for inspiration that’s closer to home, there is nowhere as beautiful, remote and a little bit dangerous all at the same time as the Australian Outback. Spending a night under the stars watching the sun go down at Uluru is one of the most memorable experiences of my life!
